A Commitment to Creating Safe Sporting Environments
PV is dedicated to the wellbeing of our members, especially our younger athletes,
we recognize the paramount importance of child safety in all aspects of our
operations. In recent years, Victoria has made significant strides in child safety
legislation, and PV is committed to ensuring that we not only comply with these
regulations but also foster an environment where children feel safe, valued, and
protected.
Understanding Child Safety Legislation in Victoria
In Victoria, the Child Safety Standards were introduced to ensure that all
organisations that work with children take proactive steps to protect them. These
standards provide a framework for creating and maintaining safe environments for
children, addressing issues such as abuse, neglect, and discrimination. Compliance
with these standards is not just a legal obligation; it is a moral imperative for all
sporting clubs and organizations.
The Role of the PV Board
To adhere to the requirements of the Victoria Government and that of Pickleball
Australia the PV Board has developed a Commitment Statement and a Child Safe
Policy. To support our affiliated clubs in navigating the complexities of child safety,
the PV Board have also taken proactive steps to provide guidance on how to create
and implement effective child safety policies. These resources include:
1. We have organised a recording of a workshop aimed at educating volunteers, and
club officials about the importance of child safety and the practical steps they can
take to implement safety measures effectively.
2. A child safety policy and resource pack that clubs can tailor to their specific needs.
This ensures that each club can develop policies that are relevant and appropriate
for their unique environment. There are links to resources to help.
Clubs can access these resource kits here.
3. The PV Board is committed to providing ongoing support to clubs as they
implement their child safety policies. Please contact Viv Daniels – viv@pickleballvictoria.org
The Importance of Implementation
While having robust child safety policies is crucial, the true impact lies in their
implementation. It is essential that all members of our sporting community
understand and embrace these policies, from club committees, coaches and officials
to parents and children themselves. Here are a few reasons why widespread
implementation is vital:
- Creating a Safe Environment: Effective implementation of child safety policies
helps create an environment where children can participate in sports without
fear of harm or abuse. It fosters trust and encourages more families to engage
with the club.
- Empowering Children: When children are educated about safety protocols
and know their rights, they are more empowered to speak up if they feel
unsafe. This proactive approach can prevent potential issues before they
arise.
- Building Community Confidence Parents and guardians are more likely to
engage with a club that demonstrates a genuine commitment to child safety.
This not only increases participation rates but also strengthens community
ties.
- Mitigating Risks: A well-implemented child safety policy reduces the risk of
incidents occurring within the club, which can protect both the children and the
club's reputation.
Moving Forward Together
As we move forward, let us all commit to prioritising child safety within our clubs. By
actively implementing an appropriate policy, we can ensure a safe and welcoming
environment for every child involved in our sporting activities. Together, we can
create a culture of safety that not only complies with legislation but goes above and
beyond to protect and empower our young athletes.
