About ratings
Pickleball uses a rating system to rank players. Beginners start at Level 1.0, intermediates are at Level 3.0, and top players rate at Level 5.0 and higher.
Why should I know my rating?
In social play, we all have a more enjoyable experience when playing with people at approximately our level. Clubs and venues also often indicate a skill level that attendees should have when attending a particular session. By knowing your skill rating, you ensure a positive experience for yourself and others.
In competitions, it is essential that players demonstrate sporting behaviour and this includes entering at the appropriate skill level.
How do I determine my rating?
There is currently no perfect rating system in pickleball. However, the following can be used:
- DUPR: Short for Dynamic Universal Pickleball Rating, it uses past performance to calculate a rating relative to others. It is free to use but accurate ratings require at least 20 matches.
- Self-rating: A guide to estimate your rating. Due to the potential for inaccuracies, it is not recommended for use for entering tournaments.
- Ask a coach, referee, or seasoned player.
